Thanks, Mom

Since Mother’s Day is coming up, I have that special day in mind, but I didn’t want to write a basic post about why moms are important or what gifts you can buy your mom for Mother’s Day. I think we’ve all had enough of that.

But since Mother’s Day is indeed coming up, I have some thoughts in my head about what we can make of Mother’s Day. After all, it is one of the most important days of the year.

I say Mother’s Day is one of the most important days of the year because, after all, who would we be without our mothers? Of course, unfortunately, not everyone can say they have a great relationship with his or her mother. However, most of us can agree that we all had or have a mother figure in our lives.

Mother’s Day is the day to celebrate the feminine, nurturing, strong, understanding, kind, and patient women in our lives. I truly believe that this femininity and duality of softness and sternness is not given enough credit in our society.

I think that sometimes we forget how important these qualities in mother figures are to us, and to everyone around us. And Mother’s Day is the day to remember them.

But what can we do to honor these qualities? Most people send their mothers flowers, or gift cards to a spa. But there’s so much more we can do.

I think one of the most significant things we can do to repay those mother figures is to spend time with them. Instead of sending a gift, maybe take your mom out to ice cream and a movie. A big part of me believes that smaller gestures that involve spending more time together totally outweigh an expensive bouquet of flowers on her doorstep or a voucher to a pricey salon. Nothing beats face-to-face love and appreciation.

But what if you can’t be there with your mom? In today’s world, technology makes it so easy for us to actually see people, even if it’s through a screen from hundreds of miles away. If you can, FaceTime or Skype that mother figure.

Another idea I read about on workingmother.com is to give back to all the moms in the world, especially the less fortunate ones. There are charities dedicated to moms, gift sources that donate portions of sales to charities for moms, and women’s shelters that bound to have moms in them. This article mentions a site called Goodshop, where you can pick a charity to which part of your money will go to. The article also encourages you to donate clothes to a woman’s shelter around mother’s day, because every mom deserves to be acknowledged and cared for.

Real Talk.
